The Tar Spot Alert System enhances the monitoring of field- and micro-climate conditions—such as temperature, humidity, and leaf wetness—in relation to tar spot and other disease development. This data, combined with disease history, will support the development of a Nebraska-optimized tar spot alert system for our corn growers. Recognizing the rapid westward expansion of this disease, the Nebraska Corn Board (NCB) has prioritized this project since the 2025 fiscal year research initiatives. As part of a broader push to improve production efficiency and pest management across the state, the NCB is actively supporting the development of this digitized alert system. Once completed, the tool will empower growers with localized, real-time data to optimize their scouting efforts and make informed disease management decisions.
